The Sheffield Sabres got their season back on track this weekend at home against Leeds Beckett Carnegie, taking their record to 3-4 with one more game to go, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
The Sabres were saddened to hear of the loss of oldboy Rob Worboys the previous weekend and a minute silence was observed before the game started. The game started with a missing man play, the left slot vacated the field and 5 yard delay of game penalty was taken by the Sabres. They were not hampered by this penalty and it didn’t take long for Ola Fashoro to score a long catch and run touchdown, following a 10 yard run by rookie running back Ruben Pare. The touchdown was followed up by two extra points to take an 8-0 lead.
Beckett hit back soon after, their running back ran out of bounds at the goal line but scored on the following play, their PAT kick was blocked by Nick Carver. A fumble gave Beckett the ball back near midfield on the opening play of the next drive, but they turned the ball over on downs due to a sack by linebacker Charlie Taylor.
On the next drive Jacob Hardy rolled out of the pocket and found Fashoro again, the latter broke 4 tackles for a 40 yard gain. A few plays later Hardy found Simon Arnold in the end zone for his second receiving td of the season, an incomplete 2 point attempt left the score 14-6 to the Sabres.
A quick three and out forced Beckett to punt, a good kick left the Sabres offence backed up near their own end zone. The offensive line gave their quarterback all day to find Simon Arnold, who took the ball into Beckett’s half. After a punt Mofi Jaiyebo picked the ball off and got the offence back on the field.
A balanced Sabres offence gained yards on the ground and through the air, and Ola Fashoro scored again on a short pass. The score 20-6 at half time.
The second half started badly for the Sabres, as a short kick-off bounced in front of the returner and was recovered by Beckett in great field position. Leeds turned the ball over on downs a third time near the goal line.
A blocked punt gave Leeds Beckett the ball back near the goal line, and they scored on a short run. A field goal pass was batted down by Usama Mujtaba.
The Sabre’s offence stuttered in the second half and had the defence to thank after nose tackle Kai Wolff forced a fumble which was recovered for a touchdown by Charlie Taylor, his second of the season. Jacob Hardy ran in for two extra points to go 28-12 ahead.
The Offence ran the ball well to kill the clock, converting a key third and one to allow themselves to kneel the clock out for the win.
For Worboys #17 RIP
