Why should I join the Sabres?
The Sabres play in the Northern Conference of the British Universities American Football League (www.buafl.net) and play an 8 game regular season over the winter. The season also features an annual Varsity game against cross-town rivals, the Sheffield Hallam Warriors.
The Sabres are one of the most professional sports club at the University of Sheffield in terms of their organisation and success both on and off the field. As a club, we are role models for other university clubs and we were awarded Sheffield University Club Sport Club of the Year 2009 as well as making the top 3 shortlist in 2010 and 2011.
As well as success on the field, the Sabres have a fantastic social life. As well as massive socials with the Sabrecats, the University Cheerleading Squad, we are the only university club to be sponsored by Bar1, the Sheffield Student Union bar, who dedicate their Sunday nights to the Sabres and American Football.
As the many players who have previously worn a Sabres shirt will tell you, being a part of this great club has been an integral part of their university life. As a club we guarantee that if you put the effort in, we will make it worth your while.
Want to try out as a player?
American Football is a fantastic team sport in which there are a variety of positions for people of many sizes and we have a strong gym ethos with players big and small, all striving to improve themselves off the field. The philosophy of the team on the field and in training is Speed & Violence. If all this sounds appealing, then we want to hear from you.
The club also has a qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach and a sponsorship deal with Maximuscle to help players achieve this and the club will provide you with all the advice and assistance you need to become a better athlete.
Due to the nature of university sport, we lose a number of players to graduation each year, which means that there is a fantastic opportunity for all new players to get on the field. However, even if this is not the case, we run JV games in which all players who may not get on the field to begin with will get their chance to show the coaches what they can do in a game situation.
In return for their commitment, players receive coaching from one of the best coaching staffs in the UK. The club has 15 qualified coaches with a vast amount of experience at all levels of the game and are led by Head Coach Tim Mullinar.
Want to help off the field?
The Sabres always need people to be involved with the club in a non-playing capacity in roles such as: statisticians, game day assistants, video co-ordinators and photographers. These people are highly valued within the organisation and play just as big a role as the players in the running of the club. This is a great way to boost your CV whilst being part of a team involved a game you may already, or grow to love!
