On Sunday 16th November the Sheffield Sabres host the Derby Braves in what is sure to be an exciting match. With both teams currently winless this season this really is a must-win game to avoid relegation at the end of the year.
The Sabres, having lost significantly last week, will be keen to quiet the critics and get their first win of the season. After being kept to just one score last week the offence will be hoping to get a lot more points on the board this week.
Derby will also be eager to score their first touchdown of the season, after their offence was shut out by the Stirling Clansmen last week, though their defence did manage to keep them to 19 points.
This match is somewhat of a grudge match with both teams being promoted from the same division upon creation of the premiership. Two years ago the Sabres looked for their first perfect season having beaten Hallam for the first time in 5 years. However, Derby had other ideas and handed Sheffield their only loss of the season to take the division title. Last year, the Braves looked to go undefeated again, but lost to Sheffield late in the season meaning that the Sabres reigned division champions.
The last time these two teams faced off was won by just a field goal at 10-6 to Sheffield. The year before was just a one score game with 14-6 to Derby. The scorelines of these last two meets show just how evenly matches these two teams have been consistently for a few years. This year both teams will be looking for anything to get that edge over the other.
This history of ruining each other’s potentially perfect seasons to take the division title has created quite the rivalry between the two teams, especially with both being considered the underdogs of the Premiership North, which is sure to add to the atmosphere this weekend!
Kickoff will be at 1:00 at Goodwin Sports Centre top pitches, entry is completely free so bring your friends!
