It’s finally here, the match we’ve all been waiting for…VARSITY! After a year off, American Football makes a return to varsity and this year promises to be an instant classic. So far it’s business as usually for Uni of as we take an early 21-12 lead, the Sabres will be looking to add to that lead.
The Sabres and Warriors have already faced each other twice this season, both times the Warriors just coming out on top with a last minute field goal deciding the last one. This time around,
Heading into this game it was quite simple, win and we’re in, lose and we have to rely on other results from the rest of Div 1 North. After a hugely disappointing loss to the LJMU fury, the Sabres were left scratching their heads. Nevertheless, the bye week gave the Sabres enough time to plan for UCLan. Last time the teams met was a close 20-13, which saw the defence get 6 turnovers and last minute 4th down stop which secured the W.
To kick things off, the offence started with terrible field
The Sabres travelled to JMO Sports Park with the aim of clinching playoff football against relegation contenders LJMU Fury on Sunday. After an early start (which saw a pre 7am bus meet to the horror of many players) the Sabres got to JMO and received the first kick off of the game which was fumbled before being recovered by rookie wide receiver #2 Joe Dorr close to the halfway line. The sting of defeat from last week’s match against the Hallam Warriors has not lessened over the past few days. But rather than letting it bring them down, the Sabres took this as a humbling experience. Throughout the season the Sabres rush defense has been nothing short of incredible, averaging just 29-yards allowed over the first 5 games of the season. Against Hallam on Sunday, the Sabres defense allowed 198-yards of rushing, a stat they’ll want to forget quickly.

After a well-deserved break the Sheffield Sabres looked to finish the season unbeaten at home, their final obstacle is their cross town rivals, the Hallam Warriors. With both Sheffield teams sitting in 1st and 2nd positions of the Yorkshire/Lancashire conference a win for either could mean the title and one of the top seeds in the playoffs. So the stage was set and with the Sabres needing to win by 10 or more points they set out to make a statement.
