Game Review: Steel Bowl 2016

The Sabres were unfortunate in a close, hard fought varsity fixture this year, each team giving up only one touchdown resulting in a Hallam Warriors win of 13-10. The game saw numerous long drives from each team, with excellent defence from The Sabres recovering 3 fumbles and giving up only one deep pass play for a Hallam Warriors touchdown on a blown coverage. Game Preview: Steel Bowl 2016

It’s that time of year again, the Sheffield Sabres face the Hallam Warriors in front of a sell-out crowd at Goodwin this Sunday at 1 o’clock. After a long season it’s now time for the Steel Bowl, Varsity is a fierce rivalry match which both teams will be desperate to win. What has been your proudest moment this season?

Some of the highs have included the victory over Leeds Beckett, which had been somewhat of a monkey on our back over the last few seasons. There has also been the emergence of some of our young players, especially those who had been bit part players in previous seasons. These young men have stepped out of the shadows and shown leadership by example on the field.

What has been your proudest moment this season?

Seeing players who had never played the sport prior to joining the Sabres making big game changing plays to secure crucial victories.

How many Varsity games have you been involved in?

This will be my 6th Varsity game split between playing and coaching

How does it differ from the other games?

The intensity, the rivalry, the crowd noise, the pride in wearing your university colours in such a big competition. No other game I’ve been a part of matters more than the Steelbowl!

6 Varsity games, none with University of Sheffield

How does it differ from the other games?

It is intense, traditional rivalry games are always much more complex, people train and prepare harder, the hits are harder, the aggression is up, the intensity is up. Its a great experience being involved with American Football Varsity.
